BFA Statement
We are dying, women are dying. In 2022, Roe v Wade was overturned, and women's bodily autonomy rights were revoked along with it. Depending on the geographical location, doctors can no longer care for women properly, in fear of losing their medical license in the process. Having been passed in 1973, Roe v Wade was revoked only 49 years later. Birth control was not legal until 1965 for married women, and 1972 for unmarried women. With the track record of our society, one could guess it may only be a matter of time before contraceptive rights are also taken away from us.
With my works, I bring attention to this issue by creating beautiful and morbid pieces. I fabricate realistic and lively flowers for a stance of hope and need through metal chasing which allows me to create three-dimensional detail. I cast dried dead flowers to show what is happening to women, and I incorporate bees as a symbol of life and passing. Bees are important imagery for my pieces as they are seen as messengers to the other side. The Celtic tradition of "telling the bees" is one where people would travel to a hive in order to express their heartache and loss. I have created wearables to immerse the viewers with the narrative.
My pieces are my protest. My own and every woman's voice needs to be heard. With these works, I am hoping to reach people and open their eyes to what is happening around them and to them.
